Basil Christopher Butler OSB (7 May – 20 September ) was a convert from the Church of England to the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Roman Catholic priest, the 7th Abbot of Downside Abbey, one-time Abbot President of the English Benedictine Congregation, an auxiliary bishop of Westminster, an internationally respected scripture scholar, a consistent defender of Archdiocese: Westminster.

The Basilica of St Gregory the Great at Downside, commonly known as Downside Abbey, is a Benedictine monastery in England the Abbot of Downside book the senior community of the English Benedictine main apostolate is the Downside School, for the education of children aged eleven to eighteen.

Both the abbey and the school are located at Stratton-on-the-Fosse Order: Benedictine. The Abbot of Downside, Dom Christopher Butler, emerged as one of the most significant prelates at the Second Vatican Council. He came to Rome as President of the English Benedictine Congregation and soon attracted worldwide attention by his contributions to debate.
